Hill Station

Galilee, Israel

2018

Set within the ridges and valleys of the Galilean terrain, “Hill Station” is a space for living, working, and learning in harmony with its surroundings. It brings together living spaces, workshops, and research facilities into a self-sufficient and functional design. Guided by Earthship principles, the project operates independently, harnessing renewable energy, collecting and managing water, and supporting food production on-site.

The design leverages the hillside’s and excavated terrain’s natural thermal mass to maintain stable indoor temperatures year-round. Partially embedded structures blend seamlessly into the landscape, reducing exposure to temperature extremes while enhancing energy efficiency. Passive solar strategies optimize winter sunlight for warmth while carefully positioned openings and cross-ventilation keep the interiors cool and breathable during the summer.

Locally sourced materials are used wherever possible, with natural stone and wood creating a strong connection to the region’s character. Openings are designed to maximize natural light and frame views of the surrounding terrain, rooting the project in its unique setting. The design is carefully tailored to Galilee’s climate and landscape, ensuring functionality and minimal environmental impact.

“Hill Station” prioritizes efficient resource use and low environmental impact while exploring ways to live sustainably and in tune with nature; it serves as a practical and adaptable model for living and working within the rhythms of the land.
